MEP urges Remain supporters to vote for the Lib Dems in Euro elections

A South West of England MEP who left the Conservative Party over Brexit is calling on Remain voters to back the Liberal Democrats in the European elections. Julie Girling, who has served the region in the European Parliament for the last 10 years, said the Liberal Democrats were the strongest Remain party in the South West. Even though sitting Green MEP Molly Scott-Cato opposes Brexit, Ms Girling said it the Liberal Democrats who has the best chance of winning a seat in the elections on May 23. "The Liberal Democrats scored a huge success in last week's local elections, gaining more than 160 seats across the South West," Ms Girling, pictured left with Gloucestershire Lib Dem leader Paul Hodgkinson, said. "I have respect for Molly Scott-Cato and wish her well, but the facts are that the Lib Dems have always been a strongly pro-European party and are clearly the strongest Remain party here. Council 'red tape' delaying work to improve Wellington Parade garden

Ground work to improve Wellington Parade Garden on London Road has been delayed. The city council had planned to start construction this month and follow on with the planting of shrubs and plants in April. But Lib Dem councillors Jeremy Hilton and Isabel Brazil have been told that tenders haven't even been issued for the work. Tenders have been delayed by the city council's legal services team. Currently, the garden is closed because it has become a location of problem street drinking. Adults have been drinking alcohol to excess, fighting and arguing between themselves, and using local residents' front gardens as a toilet. The new garden layout has been designed to be more attractive and to discourage street drinking. Councillor Hilton, who represents Kingsholm & Wotton, said: "The delay in construction of the new garden is disappointing, but this is becoming normal with projects run by Gloucester City Council.
