Gloucester Liberal Democrats have announced their candidate for the forthcoming by-election in Barnwood ward.

Local resident Ashley Bowkett is hoping to win the seat when voters go to the polls next month.

The by-election has been caused by the sudden death of long-serving and well-respected Conservative councillor for the area, Lise Noakes.

Ashley, 40, a married father of one, is already working alongside well-known Liberal Democrat city councillor Joanne Brown and county councillor David Brown, who have a strong record in sticking up for residents.

"I am pleased to have been chosen by the Liberal Democrats to represent the area where my family and I call home," he said.

"I have lived in Barnwood for six years and would be proud to serve Barnwood on the city council.

"I am already working closely with Councillor Joanne Brown, in talking to residents about their concerns and taking up issues on their behalf.

"I personally didn't know Councillor Noakes but her reputation preceded her. I would be proud to follow in her footsteps."

Ashley is committed to supporting the local community.

"I am particularly interested in taking up issues such as getting local roads and pavements fixed and tackling litter," he said.

"I want to promote the local environment and wildlife and make Barnwood a safer, cleaner and more enjoyable place for us all to live."

Ashley made his home in Gloucester in 2011 after spending eight years working in China, Singapore, and the US.

He is an award-winning documentary producer/director, and has worked in international television production, broadcasting, and distribution since the early 2000s.

Councillor Jeremy Hilton, leader of Gloucester Liberal Democrats, said: "Ashley will make a superb councillor for Barnwood.

"He lives in Barnwood with his family and knows the area well.

"The Liberal Democrats have a long record of action in Barnwood. Joanne Brown and David Brown are well-respected for all their hard work. I know Ashley will make an excellent addition to the team."
