The Liberal Democrats and its predecessor parties have a long history of liberalism in Gloucester. The first Liberal MP was elected to represent the city in 1859 and continued for the next 50 years. The Liberal Democrats are now the challengers to the Conservatives in Gloucester and as of May 2024 form the administration running the city council.
