Rochdale Liberal Democrats are delighted to announce that Cllr. Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council has been elected to represent Cheadle in a stunning By-Election success. Despite a very negative and often disgraceful Conservative Campaign - Mark will join Cllr. Paul Rowen MP in Parliament to speak up for Greater Manchester. The Labour Party, who did their level best to make inroads in this seat lost their deposit.
Rochdale MP - Paul Rowen, has renewed his call for all landlords to fit and regularly check smoke alarms in all their properties. His campaign follows the recent tragedy in his Constituency where 3 young children died. Paul has written an Early Day Motion that has been supported by over 40 MP's to lobby for a change in the law. Paul is encouraging more MP's to show their support for an extra responsibility for Landlords to keep checking their tenant's smoke alarms.
It is now clear that the two controversial planning applications for Rosebery High School and for a supermarket in Upper High Street have both been delayed and will not be heard on 21st July as originally expected. Instead they are expected to come before the next meeting of the Planning Committee on 8th September.
Steve Dixon, the Chairman of Epsom & Ewell Liberal Democrats, has asked the Secretary of State, via the Department for Education and Science (Schools Division), to review the decision to permit the sale of land at Rosebery School. The site, known locally as the "Cabbage Patch", is currently the subject of a controversial planning application that would include the building of 72 dwellings with access from Rosebank.
The latest Planning Application for Upper High Street, Epsom, proposes a Supermarket with four floors of car parking above, replacing Iceland, Allams, part of the car park, the toilets and three houses. This would be instead of the scheme with small shops and flats over them, already approved by an Inspector after being turned down by the Council.
