The Liberal Democrats have welcomed the decision to appoint a new city council waste contractor.

Ubico will provide Gloucester with waste and recycling services, street and toilet cleaning, grounds and tree maintenance from April next year - replacing Amey.

As the company is co-owned by the other district council's in Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire it should mean it is easier to improve waste services.

The decision to award the contract to Ubico was taken by the ruling Conservative cabinet.

Lib Dem leader Councillor Jeremy Hilton said: "For 15 years the city has had to put up with the 'worst waste contract ever' after a deal was done with Acord, the predecessor to Amey.

"The service has been very poor at times and the leader of the council has described Amey as a nightmare to work with.

"Liberal Democrats are fully in agreement to award the new contract, from April 2022, to Unbico for our waste and environmental services.

"We will have ownership of the contractor and much better control on the quality of the service that we have done for the last 14 years.

"I am disappointed that the Conservative cabinet did not go for enhanced services, but working with Ubico should make that much easier to do that in future for an incoming Liberal Democrat administration."
