WARNING FOLLOWING VEHICLE CRIME IN GLOUCESTER
Officers in Gloucester have been taking part in extra patrols and warning the public of a rise in vehicle crimes in the Longlevens and Elmbridge areas.
In February more than 40 vehicle related crimes were reported to police in these areas, compared to an average of four incidents over previous months.
A number of the crimes reported to the Constabulary involved unlocked vehicles being entered and property stolen from within.
Police have been making enquiries in the area and have been reviewing CCTV which shows men walking up driveways and trying car doors.
So far police have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the incidents and he has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
Police are appealing for the public's help to identify a man pictured in CCTV footage and shown to be trying car doors in the Longlevens area. If you know this man, please call police on 101 and quote incident 84 of 15 February, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Gloucester Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Jason Keates said: "We would like to reassure the public that we have put on patrols in these areas to try and stop this spike and we're reviewing CCTV to bring those responsible to justice.
"However, the police cannot do this alone and the public also need to take measures themselves to protect their own property, such as ensuring your vehicles are locked and any valuables are removed.
"If anyone sees anything suspicious then they should contact police immediately. Earlier this week a member of the public reported suspicious activity in the Longlevens area and on police attendance it was discovered the man was a milkman on his round.
"Although on this occasion the activity was totally lawful, I wish to thank that member of the public who took the time to call us that morning.
"Next time it may well be someone who is of interest to the police. If you are unsure whether to call or not after seeing suspicious activity, then I ask that you do make that call."
