Historic St Oswald's Priory attacked by vandals
Foul language and tags have been sprayed over the Priory in an overnight attack
One of Gloucester's most important monuments has received a Government grant to help with ongoing maintenance.
St Oswald's Priory has been awarded £25,000 from the Culture Recovery Fund to pay towards the cost of conservation work.
Among the projects is placing a turf layer onto the top of the walls, which helps reduce the deterioration of the stones.
The Priory, which is a nationally important monument, was founded by Queen Aethelflaed in around the year 900.
Liberal Democrat Dr Rebecca Trimnell, who is standing in Hempsted & Westgate, said: "I am absolutely delighted by this news.
"However, this is very much, I will believe it when I see it.
"I have lived literally less than a stone's throw from St. Oswald's Priory for over seven years and it is shameful that the Tory-led council have literally kept the upkeep of this beautiful monument on the back burner.
"It has fallen into a bad state and it goes without saying it is more than about time something was done."
The remains of St Oswald of Northumbria were interred in a crypt there following Aethelflaed and her brother Edward King of Wessex bringing them to Gloucester.
Aethelflaed and her husband, King Aethelred of Mercia were also buried there.
