A Liberal Democrat city councillor is delighted that the literacy project he has been shepherding has got off the ground in the last couple of weeks.

Councillor Sebastian Field, who represents Podsmead Ward, has been working with Linda Cohen of Lilypad PR and staff at the Crypt School to organise the project.

As part of the project, senior pupils from Crypt go into primary schools and hear the younger pupils read.

This began in the last week of January with the first school being Grange Primary Academy.

The library at Grange has been transformed thanks to fundraising and donations of books via Lilypad PR, and a contribution from Sebastian Field's ward fund.

Councillor Field said: "Podsmead doesn't yet have a primary school but many of our local children attend nearby schools in Grange, Linden and Matson for example.

"This scheme will benefit the pupils by improving their confidence and literacy skills, as well as instilling a love of literature and books from an early age.

"My thanks to the staff at Crypt and Grange schools for their hard work, and to Linda Cohen for all her efforts."

If anyone wishes to donate money or good condition books to the school, please get in touch.
