A pothole-ridden road in the centre of Gloucester is set to be resurfaced by the county council after pressure from the Liberal Democrats.

Dr Rebecca Trimnell, Liberal Democrat campaigner in Westgate, has been campaigning for Parliament Street, from Chillingworth Mews to Brunswick Road, to be resurfaced because of its poor condition.

The Lib Dem team in Westgate have also been pushing for Cromwell Street to be resurfaced but the road, which is also in a poor state, which is not on the programme of works.

Recently some emergency patching was done in Parliament Street but now it has been confirmed by the county council the road will be resurfaced.

Dr Trimnell said: "I am really pleased to say that I finally received confirmation from the county council that Parliament Street is to be resurfaced at the end of February.

"This road has been breaking up and needs resurfacing. The date of the work will be subject to the weather conditions, but I hope by mid-March it will have a lovely new surface."

The county council has said the road works will be carried out from February 26 until March 11. A letter from them will be sent to residents confirming the dates and times.

Fellow Westgate Lib Dem George Barwood said: "We are delighted about Parliament Street, but also disappointed that the county council won't completely resurface Cromwell Street, as it is also in a dreadful state.

"The Tory-controlled council keeps just saying no."

The third Lib Dem Spotlight team member Farook Mota added: "We are very persistent as the Westgate Lib Dem team and its great news that Parliament Street will be resurfaced.

"We will keep pressing the county council to include Cromwell Street in the capital highways programme."
