Mock Debenhams design welcomed

The Liberal Democrats have welcomed the mock designs for what the former Debenhams building could look like.

Gloucester-based Quattro Design Architects has developed two concepts for the building off Northgate Street.

The first design sees the ground floor of the 1930s art deco building for retail and hospitality, while the remainder set aside for commercial units.

The second option would see retail on the ground floor and residential properties above.

Councillor Jeremy Hilton, leader of Gloucester Liberal Democrats, said: "We welcome these mock designs of how the Debenhams building could be transformed into a mix use development of retail, city centre living and commercial offices.

"It is also pleasing to see that with a little imagination how the building could turned into a space for arts and culture.

"Reports suggest the building has been sold and we are yet to learn of what the future holds for it.

"Debenhams is listed as a 'positive building' which means if the new owners wished to demolish the building it requires permission from Gloucester City Council.

"What we need now is the council to categorically state they will not allow the Debenhams building to be demolished."
