Majority of voters in Gloucester want second referendum on Brexit

The majority of voters in Gloucester now support the demand for the people to be given the final say on the outcome of the Brexit negotiations, according to a new poll.

Respected pollsters YouGov said 54% of respondents in Gloucester now want their say on the deal Prime Minister Theresa May reaches with the European Union.

YouGov quizzed almost 26,000 people for the People's Vote campaign across the South West of England and found that a majority in nearly every constituency in the region now support a new referendum.

Dr Rebecca Trimnell, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Gloucester, is calling on the city's MP Richard Graham to vote down whatever Brexit deal the Prime Minister presents to Parliament and demand a People's Vote.

"Richard Graham and I both voted to remain in the referendum two years ago because we believe Britain is better off in the EU," she said.

"The YouGov poll is further evidence of the need for a second referendum - the people of Gloucester must have their say on the deal Mrs May brings back from the EU.

"The public should be able to choose whether the deal is the right deal for Britain's future. If it's not, then the public should be able to reject it and remain in the European Union."

The findings, which are expected to have a significant impact on the parliamentary battle over Brexit in the coming months, are based on the same modelling methodology that confounded conventional wisdom and correctly predicted Labour's surprise success in last year's election.

Data scientists working for YouGov have produced a report showing 585 seats out of 632 surveyed back a People's Vote.

The techniques have proved far more accurate than conventional polling in helping them predict the outcome of last year's General Election.

Dr Trimnell added: "Mr Graham has a majority of 5,500 votes and Gloucester is always a key battleground at the General Election.

"He cannot afford to ignore the findings of this poll which show a majority of voters want a second referendum.

"He should back demands for a second referendum or face the possibility of losing his seat in Gloucester."
