Liberal Democrats make history with stunning by-election win in Devon

The Liberal Democrats have won the Tiverton and Honiton by-election - overturning a Conservative majority of more than 24,000.

Richard Foord won the Devon seat with more than 22,000 votes after the constituency saw a swing of almost 30%.

The by-election was triggered when former Conservative MP Neil Parish resigned after admitting watching pornography in Parliament.

It will go down in history as the biggest majority ever overturned at a byelection, showing once again that the Liberal Democrats are beating the Conservatives right across their former heartlands.

Following the victory, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey posed with a blue door with the message "It's time to show Boris Johnson the door" on it.

Sir Ed said the Conservatives' excuses for by-election losses to the Liberal Democrats were "starting to wear thin".

"For years, Boris Johnson has told people things will get better. But under his leadership, things only get worse.

"So, let me tell the Prime Minister what the British people expect - they expect our country to be led. And he has shown no leadership, whatsoever."

Sir Ed accused the Prime Minister of taking the British people for granted as inflation soars and working people struggle to fill up their cars.

He added: "Boris Johnson has deceived the British people and taken them for granted for far too long."

In Gloucester, the Liberal Democrats are the challengers to the Conservatives across the city.

They are the official opposition on the city council with 11 council seats. The Labour Party has just three councillors.
