The Liberal Democrats have welcomed news work is due to begin to widen Llanthony Road in Gloucester - dubbed the 'missing link'.

The carriageway is to be widened to provide two lanes in each direction and improve traffic flows along the road, which is known as the South West Bypass.

Preparation work is due to start at the beginning of March and there are plans for the main construction work to be carried out later this year.

Dr Rebecca Trimnell, of Westgate Ward Liberal Democrats, said: "I'm very much in support of the improvements being proposed on Llanthony Road.

"It is about time, we need this work to get started as soon as possible as it'll improve traffic flow, access to the new football stadium and give cyclists and pedestrians much wider lanes.

"I am however mindful of the timing of this announcement as we are very close to May's local elections and hope this is not simply a Conservative vote sweetener."

The South West Bypass links the city centre of Gloucester to the M5 at Quedgeley and is the only section of the road that has not been widened. It has been dubbed the 'missing link'.
