Lib Dem election campaign is off to a flying start
Rebecca Trimnell's campaign to be Gloucester's next MP is off to a flying start as Britain heads for a winter general election.
On Tuesday MPs backed a bill for a general election to be held on December 12 and could be become law by the end of the week if approved by the House of Lords.
Gloucester Liberal Democrats are already fighting hard to win and want to stop Brexit as it has become a national embarrassment.
The general election will be the Brexit election and in Gloucester recent election results have shown the Liberal Democrats are the strongest remain party in the city.
Dr Trimnell is already leading a large team of Liberal Democrat members and supporters taking a pro-EU message to local people across the city.
"It might be cold, the nights might be drawing in, but the Liberal Democrats will be out on the doorsteps talking to residents," said Dr Trimnell, who is the Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate for Gloucester.
"If you want to stop Brexit then the only way to do it in Gloucester is to vote for the Liberal Democrats.
"The Liberal Democrats beat both the Conservatives and Labour in this year's European elections, won the Podsmead and Barnwood by-elections and finished second in the city in the county council elections.
"The Brexit chaos has changed politics considerably and it is now no longer about whether people vote for the traditional two parties.
"The days of the only choice being between Labour or the Conservatives are over. Like it or not this election will be the Brexit election.
"It will only be after we have sorted out the Brexit shambles that we will be able to focus on other important issues such as the NHS, education, employment, housing and climate change."
The only way to stop Bre xit is to have a general election before Christmas because there is not the support in the House of Commons for a People's Vote.
"There are two barriers to stopping Brexit. The first is Boris Johnson who has proven time and time again that he can't be trusted," said Dr Trimnell.
"The second is Jeremy Corbyn's Labour party. His party has time and time again backed Brexit.
"Last week he failed to back a second referendum in Parliament and allowed 19 Labour MPs to vote for Boris Johnson's deal.
"To stop Brexit, we need to get Boris Johnson out of 10 Downing Street and to increase the number of remain-supporting MPs in Parliament. The only way to do that is with a general election.
"In the EU referendum 42% of residents across Gloucester voted remain.
"I am therefore calling on all remain voters back in 2016 to vote for me as the next MP for Gloucester at the next general election."
