The future of a prominent conifer tree in Gloucester remains uncertain as a former Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate fights to keep it standing.

The tall conifer tree of which two remain are estimated to be over half a century old and stands on the corner of St Mary's Street along Gouda Way in the City Centre.

Dr Rebecca Trimnell said: "I had a constructive meeting with the leader of Gloucester City Council a few days before Christmas at the site of this prominent conifer tree to discuss its future after calls had been made by King's School for it to be felled due to damage to their wall.

"I am disappointed to hear from the leader of the city council that a suggested option put to King's School to rebuild the wall further inside the school's property in order to both save the tree and also remove any potential liability from Gloucester City Council has been rejected by the school.

"I am disappointed by the school's response in not being open to a solution where there is one that would please everyone, and fundamentally to save this tree from being felled.

"I have made contact with King's School and remain hopeful that a compromise can happen over the coming weeks.

"I am also concerned that the nesting season begins at the beginning of March therefore any decision made will have to be before then."
