Cycling and walking: What do you think?

2 Jul 2020

The Government has announced £250 million for local councils to spend on improving cycling and walking.

The county council is the highway authority, but the city council has been asked to suggest ideas.

Here are those early suggestions that affect Westgate Ward.

- Reducing road space on St. Oswald's Road Priory Road west bound section to

just one lane. This is an air quality hot spot.

- Narrowing the Quay to provide an Esplanade along the River Severn

- Broadening the pedestrianisation in the city centre by closing aspects of lower Northgate, Barbican Way, Bearland, Longsmith Steet, Berkeley Street, Hare Lane and Pitt Street.

Jeremy Hilton has also suggested that the footway from Riverside Sports Centre to Priory Road junction is widened to create a joint pedestrian and cycle path.

George Barwood said: "All these proposals are ideas that would need to be worked up by the highway engineers and may or may not work.

"We would love to hear your views on these proposals or any suggestions that you might have to improve cycling opportunities in central Gloucester."
