City councillor calls for more speed limiting signage in Podsmead street used as ‘rat run’

A city councillor has urged council bosses to install more 20mph limit signage in a Podsmead street which he says is being used as a rat run.

Councillor Sebastian Field says residents of Tuffley Crescent have contacted him over their concerns about speeding along the road, between Tuffley Avenue and Podsmead Road.

There is a 20mph limit along Tuffley Crescent, but this changes to 30mph at both exits to the other roads.

There are 20mph signs at only the two ends of Tuffley Crescent, which change to 30mph on turning into Podsmead Road and Tuffley Avenue.

Councillor Field, who represents Podsmead, has contacted the county council highways department about the problem.

“When I was contacted by the residents, I took action on this issue by asking the police to carry out average speed checks,” he said.

“This was done, and whilst the average speeds were within the limit, some speeds were close to or above the limit. I have personally witnessed vehicles driving along this road at way more than 20mph.”

The Liberal Democrat said: “I also asked highways to inspect the speed bumps, and they have reported back to say that the condition and paint surface of the bumps is acceptable for now.

“I will keep monitoring the condition of these speed bumps, and I would urge residents to get in touch if they notice anything amiss.”

Councillor Field now wants highways to install more 20mph signs, halfway along the road.

“I don’t think drivers will always see the 20mph signs as they enter Tuffley Crescent,” he said.

“They see a long stretch of road and, despite the speed bumps, feel they can put their foot down to get to their destination quicker.

“With a couple of 20mph signs halfway along the road, they would be made more aware of the speed limit.”

He added: “It’s an important safety concern because nearby we have the Earl’s Park estate where there are lots of families living.

“At any point a child playing could run out onto Tuffley Crescent and a speeding motorist wouldn’t have time to stop.

“I’ve written to highways to request extra signage to promote speed awareness and road safety. I hope they will respond favourably.”
