A newly-elected councillor in Gloucester has hailed security improvements in his ward which have been carried out at his request.

Councillor Sebastian Field, who won the recent by-election in Podsmead for the Liberal Democrats, has had a range of improvements carried out to the Carmel Webb memorial garden on Scott Avenue.

"I have been approached over the last few months by many residents who wanted to see improvements to the Carmel Webb memorial garden on Scott Avenue," Councillor Field said.

"The hedges and brambles were overgrown, which was not only untidy but also a security concern. There was also antisocial behaviour and littering in the garden.

"I asked for the hedges and brambles to be cut back and this has now been done.

"The council have also installed a new litter bin at my request so this should hopefully reduce the littering problem - as long as people use the bin.

"It is great to see this garden looking so good."

Councillor Field went for a problem-solving walkabout in August with the PCSO for Podsmead, Suzanne Sexton.

They logged many issues and Councillor Field reported them to the relevant agencies.

Other improvements to the area that have now been done include the phone box on Podsmead Road which was cleaned after Councillor Field got in touch with BT.

He also gave the go-ahead for the metal panels to be removed from the shelter in the Scott Avenue play area.

"This will make the police's job much easier as they can now see into the shelter and phone box when they are on patrol, and it makes it harder for people to hide any illegal activity," Councillor Field added.

"I am taking action all across Podsmead."
