Caroline Courtney to challenge the Conservatives in Tuffley
Gloucester Liberal Democrats have announced their candidate for the forthcoming by-election in Tuffley.
Local resident Caroline Courtney will be the challenger to the Conservatives.
The by-election, which is likely to be held on October 13, has been caused by the death of Conservative councillor Colin Organ.
Caroline lives on Stroud Road with her husband, adult daughter and two dogs.
She is an IT consultant and has worked locally for Eagle Star, Zurich Financial Services and TSB.
While studying she worked part-time part time as a play worker at Podsmead Neighbourhood Project.
When Russia invaded Ukraine, her family wanted to help and they joined the Homes for Ukraine scheme. They now share their home with two refugees who have fled the war-torn state.
Caroline also has a strong record of voluntary work, including as a befriender to adults and children with learning disabilities and mental health issues.
More recently, during the first Covid-19 lockdown, she joined a telephone bank service calling vulnerable households to ensure they had access to food and medical supplies and to signpost any sources of support and assistance.
“I am delighted to have been selected by the Liberal Democrats to stand in Tuffley,” said Caroline.
“I live on Stroud Road with my family. Tuffley is a wonderful community, and I will do my very best to represent the area well.
“I have a strong record in voluntary work, and I am really proud my family is one of many in Gloucester providing accommodation to people from Ukraine.”
Councillor Jeremy Hilton, leader of Gloucester Liberal Democrats, said: “Caroline will make an excellent councillor for Tuffley.
“She knows the area well and has the experience, knowledge and energy to make a real difference to the residents of Tuffley.”
