Caroline Courtney just 15 votes from winning Tuffley by-election for the Liberal Democrats
Liberal Democrat Caroline Courtney missed out on winning the Tuffley by-election on October 13 by just 15 votes.
She surged from fourth place in last year's local elections to second in the by-election, which was caused by the death of a Conservative councillor, and pushing the Labour Party into third place.
Both the Labour Party and the Conservatives saw their vote and vote share drop - while the Lib Dems rose 28%
The result:
Conservatives 502 (34.9%)
Caroline Courtney (Lib Dem) 487 (33.8%)
Labour 451 (31.3%)
Caroline Courtney said: "Huge thanks to everyone who supported me in my campaign for the Tuffley by-election. It was a closely fought campaign but in the end the Conservative candidate won by just 15 votes, with Lib Dems finishing in a very close second place and Labour in third.
"While I'm disappointed to come second by such a close margin, I'm absolutely delighted and honoured to have received such support from Tuffley residents to get within touching distance of the win.
"I can't thank people enough for voting for me and for their kind messages of support - even from those who didn't vote for me but were kind enough to wish me well.
"It's heartwarming to meet people who can hold different opinions yet still show kindness and respect.
"I'm not about to go anywhere though, I am still campaigning for Tuffley and our residents on many issues such as road repairs, weeds and litter, holding developers to account and protecting our green spaces.
"Please continue to get in touch for any help or support you need in the community, if you'd like help registering for a postal vote for next time, or if you'd like to join in and help with campaigning.
"I will keep everyone informed about the work we are doing for Tuffley, and I give my thanks once again to all the residents, colleagues, volunteers and supporters who have been amazing in their support and inspire me to work hard each day."
