Boris Johnson should resign as Prime Minister

Boris Johnson should resign as Prime Minister after the UK's highest court ruled his decision to suspend Parliament was unlawful, according to Dr Rebecca Trimnell.

The Prime Minister advised The Queen to prorogue Parliament for five weeks earlier this month in order to bring forward a Queen's Speech in October outlining a raft of new policies.

But critics said he was trying to stop MPs from scrutinising his Brexit plans and the suspension was far longer than necessary for a Queen's Speech.

That decision was challenged in the courts and 11 Supreme Court judges have unanimously decided it was wrong to stop MPs carrying out duties in the run-up to Brexit on October 31.

Dr Trimnell, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Gloucester, said Prime Minister Boris Johnson should resign.

"He is not fit to be Prime Minister," she said.

"The highest court in the land has ruled his advice to The Queen on prorogation was unlawful.

"The Supreme Court judges have also upheld the ruling of Scotland's highest civil court, which said the Prime Minister did mislead the Queen.

"Parliament should not have been shut down and our MPs and Peers should be back in Parliament right now scrutinising the Government and holding the executive to account.

"Boris Johnson and his supporters, like Jacob Rees-Mogg and Dominic Cummings, should hang their heads in shame for trying to play fast and loose with the rule of law and our democracy.

"No one is above the law and today the Supreme Court and it's 11 judges have held Boris Johnson and his friends to account."

Dr Trimnell, who organised a protest outside Shire Hall against prorogation, added: "I call on Richard Graham our MP for Gloucester to say enough is enough and call for the Prime Minister's resignation too."
